Development and symptoms of cataract
|
Eye lenses consist mainly of water and protein. By the age, however, proteins lump and the normally clear lens becomes shady. Thus, in contrast with the common belief, cataract is not a film or a membrane on the natural lens, but it means fading of the lens due to which it is very difficult for the light to reach the eyes; the vision worsens and the colour intensity decreases.
These symptoms develop gradually for months or even years. According to the current scientific results there is no drug treatment or diet that can delay the development of cataract or clear the eye lenses.
The currently available most innovative technology is the ultrasound procedure (phaco-emulsification) considered today as a routine intervention; in this procedure the faded lens is removed and replaced with an artificial so called prosthetic lens implant.
Possible signs of cataract:
- blurred, dim or foggy vision;
- feeling like a film were in front of the eye or as if one was looking through a veil or nest;
- experiencing severe visual disturbance when looking at a bright surface or background;
- at night driving the light is blinding or a light space appears around the headlight;
- the glasses should be changed frequently with varying values.
Neither of the symptoms listed above necessarily means that you have cataract, but if you experience one or more symptoms, please go to an eye doctor! We will call you back!
