About the prosthetic eye lens

Today implantable eye lenses are used to replace human eye lenses in more than 95% of cataract patients. Prosthetic lenses are implanted after removal of faded lenses. Lenses are placed behind the iris; thus, it is invisible for another person.

The first prosthetic eye lens was implanted by an English ophthalmologist, Harold Ridley in 1949. Since then the implantable lenses have gone through revolutionary changes. Today's foldable lenses are made of acryl,
silicone or hydro gel, thereby preventing irritation of fine tissues of the human eyes. Lens implants are quite small: their full diameter is approx. 12 mm, and the optic has a diameter of 6.0 mm. The form of prosthetic eye lens implant is fixed, unlike the natural eye lenses it cannot change its focus to the near and far objects, therefore later the patient may need to wear glasses. However, the thick cataract-glasses or contact lenses should not be worn.

Rarely, the original lens capsule behind the implanted prosthetic lens may be thickened and its apparency worsen: a so called "secondary cataract" develops. An opening can be made on this membrane by painless laser treatment and the vision will be recovered.
The prosthetic lens implant will remain in the body throughout the life; normally it should not be removed at all.
