What do I need to know about cataracts?
A cataract is an eye disease in which the lens of the eye gradually loses its transparency and becomes cloudy. Light cannot pass directly through the lens to reach the retina. As a result, visual acuity is constantly reduced and vision becomes blurred and dull. With age, many people develop cataracts. It usually starts to cause really severe vision loss after the age of 60, but it can also occur at younger ages.
Cataracts develop very slowly, over months or even years, without any pain, making them difficult to detect. Many people think that the ever-changing and deteriorating visual acuity is simply the result of advancing age, when it is the cataract that is causing the symptoms.
Cataract treatment options
It is possible to remove the grayed lens using two surgical methods, the traditional ultrasound procedure (used by most clinics) and the most modern femtolaser technology.
The development of the technologies used is of paramount importance to our ophthalmology. We were the first in our country to introduce femtolaser surgery to increase surgical safety and improve the results obtained. Bausch+Lomb’s Stellaris Elite microsurgery system and VICTUS femtosecond laser allow for more precise and safer surgery.
Femtosecond laser cataract surgery
High-tech cataract surgery
The Victus femtolaser is capable of treating more accurately than a thousandth of a millimetre. It performs the most critical steps of the surgery based onthe pre-set values. This reduces the risks of conventional surgery improves the accuracy of the position of the implanted lens, which improves the best quality of vision available.
Advantages
- Performs the critical steps of lens surgery under medical guidance according to individualised values, without touching the lens
- Even the smallest details are revealed during surgery with the help of the built-in OCT device
- Extremely precise, it operates on high speed and with the accuracy to a thousandth of a millimetre
- The laser beam can also be used to correct astigmatism
- It puts less strain on the eyes than the traditional method
- Reduces the effects on the delicate tissues of the eye and the risk of complications
- Faster recovery and restoration of visual acuity
- You can return to your normal rhythm of life earlier
Disadvantages
- Superior service quality goes hand in hand with higher prices
Ultrasound cataract surgery (phacoemulsification)
Decades of experience
Traditional cataract surgery is performed manually. The surgeon performs each step of the operation with a hand-held instrument. He uses ultrasonic nebulization, suction and irrigation to remove the lens and prepare the eye for implantation of the intraocular lens.
Advantages
- The technology is mature
- Can be used with high safety by a surgeon with appropriate experience
- It is an efficient, fast and safe process
- The recovery time is short
- It is a more affordable service
Disadvantages
- The surgeon performs all phases of the operation manually
- Depending on the operating range of the ultrasound head, it transmits ultrasound energy to the eye
- It puts more strain on the eyes
- With premium lenses, the position of the intraocular lens cannot be perfectly planned

Frequently asked questions
Before the examination and the surgery
How do I prepare for a pre-cataract examination?
The examination will include pupil dilation, so your vision may be temporarily blurred. Driving is not recommended during this period, so please bring an escort to collect you and take you home after the examination.
To ensure a successful examination, avoid the use of make-up, perfume, cosmetics and wear comfortable clothing.
Draw up a list of questions you would like to ask our advisory colleagues and your doctor.
Why is pupil dilation necessary during the examination?
Pupil dilation is essential for a thorough eye examination, allowing the ophthalmologist to see a more complete picture of the eye’s condition. Dilating the pupil is an examination of the whole fundus of the eye to detect any abnormalities. Dilation is performed by applying eye drops.
What documents should I take with me to the examination?
Take the following documents:
ID card, address card, social security card, previous ophthalmologicalandother medical documents, glasses you currently use, contact lenses and their description.
What happens if I need surgery on both eyes?
If you need surgery on both eyes, the operation will take place at two different times. Usually the worse eye is operated on first, followed a few weeks later by the other eye. Your ophthalmologist will discuss the most suitable date with you.
Is it possible to operate on both eyes at the same time?
Yes, rarely, in justified cases.
When is cataract surgery necessary?
Choosing when to have cataract surgery depends primarily on howwhat is your vision like during everyday activities. You can drive a car, watch TV or work on a computer for years after a cataract diagnosis. But when your vision becomes blurred and interferes with your work or causes problems while driving, it’s time to discuss treatment options with your eye care professional.
How should I prepare for cataract surgery?
To have a successful eye operation, there are a few things you need to remember.
You should not wear soft contact lenses 4 days, hard or semi-hard contact lenses 4 weeks before the agreed date of the surgery.
Do not wear make-up, perfume or cosmetics and wear comfortable clothes and shoes on the day of your treatment.
Avoid alcohol, sedatives and other drugs that affect the nervous system, and avoid hangovers.
You can take your regular medications as usual, and bring the day’s medicines with you.
Eat a light breakfast on the day of the surgery.
Have an escort to pick you up and take you home after the operation.
You must not drive for 24 hours after the procedure.
About the examination and the surgery
What happens on the day of the surgery?
Cataract surgery is usually an one-day procedure. Before the operation, you will be given an anaesthetic eye drop to make the procedure completely painless. The treatment itself is short, lasting approximately 10-15 minutes. After the operation, the doctor will apply a protective bandage over your eye. You can go home after a short rest in the observation room. It is important to make sure that you have someone to accompany you home after the operation.
How long does cataract surgery take?
Cataract surgery takes approximately 10-15 minutes. However, you will spend at least 4 hours at our eye center on the day of surgery, which includes checking the necessary data, a pre-treatment check-up with a specialist, preparation for the procedure, treatment in the operating room, a short rest after the treatment, a check-up with a specialist before discharge, preparation of the necessary documentation and pre-discharge counselling.
What determines which intraocular lens is implanted?
Together with your ophthalmologist, you will choose the ideal type of lens for you and then with the help of a special equipment, we will design the intraocular lens to be implanted.
During surgery, different types of intraocular lenses can be implanted in the eye. Single-focus lenses can provide good vision at a certain distance, extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses can provide good vision at distance and monitor distance, while trifocal (three-focus) lenses provide good visual acuity for reading, monitor distance and far distance.
How safe is laser cataract surgery?
Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed operations in the world. In most cases it is performed as a day surgery without anaesthesia. Complications are only a few thousandths of a percent.
After cataract surgery
When will my vision improve after surgery?
Almost immediately after surgery, you will notice an improvement in your vision, ideally within a few days, often the day after surgery your vision will be restored. However, some people with longer-standing, advanced cataracts may have blurred vision for a few days.
What can I expect after the operation?
For the first few weeks after surgery, you will need to use anti-inflammatory eye drops containing antibiotics and steroids. You will need to protect your eyes from external impact. Wearing sunglasses may be a solution to avoid the distraction of bright light. Following your doctor’s instructions and attending check-ups is essential for a smooth recovery.
What to look out for after cataract surgery?
To ensure a smooth recovery after surgery, follow these guidelines:
Do not rub or squeeze your eyes (even if they itch)
Avoid heavy physical activitires
Stay away from dusty places and avoid swimming pools for 4 weeks
Use of eye drops: Our doctor will prescribe the eye drops you need to ensure a safe recovery. It is important that you get your prescribed medication from the pharmacy and use it according to your doctor’s instructions. Try to dose your daily amount of eye drops evenly throughout the day as directed. If you are using other eye drops, wait 5 to 10 minutes between each usage.
