Why is a pediatric ophthalmology examination important?
Children’s vision problems often go unnoticed, as young children are not always able to express when they are not seeing well.
Regular eye examinations can help detect in time, for example:
- myopia (short-sightedness)
- hyperopia (farsightedness)
- heterophoria (latent strabismus)
- amblyopia (lazy eye)
- accommodative disorders
Early detection is especially important, as most vision problems in childhood can be well corrected or treated.
What does the examination include?
Pediatric visual acuity examination with prescription of glasses.
During the examination:
✔ visual acuity measurement
✔ determination of refractive error (diopters)
✔ prescription of glasses if necessary
✔ consultation with a specialist ophthalmologist
When should you come for an eye examination?
It is recommended to have an eye examination if the child:
- squints when looking at distant objects
- holds books or screens very close to the face
- frequently rubs their eyes
- complains of headaches
- quickly gets tired while reading or using screens
However, an eye examination is also recommended even if the child has no complaints, as many vision problems are asymptomatic.
